Air-Fried Salt and Pepper Tofu with Sizzling Sesame Oil

The tofu is briefly marinated and then air fried instead of pan fried, offering a healthier take on this popular Chinese dish.

Ingredients


Measurements:

  • firm tofu icon
    1 lb firm tofu
  • soy sauce icon
    ¼ cup (2 fl oz) soy sauce
  • clove garlic icon
    2 cloves garlic

    minced, divided

  • sesame oil icon
    2 tbsp sesame oil

    divided

  • vegetable oil icon
    1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • green onion icon
    2 green onions

    thinly sliced

  • red serrano or fresnos chili pepper icon
    1 red serrano or fresnos chili pepper

    thinly sliced

  • kosher salt icon
    1 tsp kosher salt
  • ground white pepper icon
    ¼ tsp ground white pepper
  • sesame seeds icon
    1 tsp sesame seeds

Instructions

  • 1Place the tofu between sheets of paper towels. Using your hands press the tofu to remove excess moisture then stand for 10 minutes to dry out. Meanwhile, continue to the next step. 
  • 2Place the soy sauce, half the garlic, half the sesame oil, and vegetable oil in a large bowl and whisk to combine. 
  • 3Cut the tofu into 1-inch cubes. Add to the marinade and gently turn to coat. Let stand for 5 minutes, to marinate, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile, continue to the next step.
  • 4Insert the oven rack into position 3 Down. Set the oven to Air Fry, Super Convection, 425°F, for 15 minutes and press Start to preheat. Meanwhile, continue to the next step.
  • 5Drain the tofu, discard the marinade. Place the air fry basket over the roasting pan to catch any drips. Arrange the tofu in a single layer, evenly spaced apart in the basket.
  • 6Once preheated, place the roasting pan on the rack to catch any drips during cooking and the basket into position 1 and air fry for 15 minutes. When the oven signals, shake the basket and continue cooking.
  • 7The tofu should be golden brown. If not, press A Bit More.
    Tip: It may need a little more or a little less cooking, best to keep an eye on it.
  • 8Place a small saucepan over high heat and add the remaining 1 tablespoon sesame oil. When the oil just begins to smoke, add the onions and chili and cook stirring, for 2 minutes, or until starting to brown. Add the remaining garlic, salt, pepper and sesame seeds and cook for 1 minute, or until fragrant. Transfer to a large heatproof bowl. Add the tofu to the chili mixture and stir.
  • 9Plate up the tofu with the hot sesame oil for that ‘oh-wow’ flavor hit.
