Tuna Melt Club Sandwich

A triple layered favorite, bursting with a creamy tuna filling and melty fontina cheese. Fresh herbs and lemon give it a flavor packed punch. And while the ingredients are nicely simple, this is no humble melt!

Measurements:

  • slices white bread icon
    12 slices white bread
  • butter icon
    2 oz butter

    at room temperature, to spread

  • fontina cheese icon
    7 oz fontina cheese

    finely grated

  • tomato icon
    4 tomatoes

    thinly sliced

  • romain lettuce leaves icon
    8 romain lettuce leaves

    halved

For the tuna filling

  • large egg icon
    1 large egg
  • can tuna in water icon
    3 x 5 oz cans tuna in water

    drained

  • mayonnaise icon
    ½ cup (3¾ oz) mayonnaise
  • sour cream icon
    3 tbsp sour cream
  • celery stalk icon
    1 celery stalk

    finely diced

  • small Belgian endive icon
    1 small Belgian endive

    thinly sliced

  • capers icon
    ¼ cup (1¼ oz) capers

    rinsed, patted dry and finely chopped

  • dill pickle icon
    1 dill pickle

    finely chopped

  • chopped flat-leaf parsley icon
    1 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley
  • chopped tarragon icon
    1 tbsp chopped tarragon
  • thinly sliced chives icon
    1 tsp thinly sliced chives
  • grated lemon zest icon
    1 tsp grated lemon zest
  • fresh lemon juice icon
    1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • kosher salt icon
    Kosher salt

  • freshly ground black pepper icon
    Freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  • 1Place the egg in a small saucepan of boiling water and cook for 10 minutes.
  • 2Carefully remove the egg from the water and place in iced water to cool. Peel and finely grate.
  • 3Place all the filling ingredients in a bowl, add the grated egg and mix to combine.
  • 4Place half the bread, in a single layer, in the air fry basket and insert the basket into rack position 2. Set the oven to Broil, High, for 4 minutes and press Start to broil. Halfway through broiling, turn the bread over and broil the other side.
  • 5The bread should be lightly toasted. If not, broil it a little longer. Remove the bread from the basket and repeat with the remaining bread.
  • 6Place 8 slices of toast on a cutting board. Spread with the butter. Divide the tuna filling between the 8 slices and sprinkle with the cheese. Place 4 of the tuna toasts in the parchment lined roasting pan.
  • 7Insert the wire rack into position 5. Place the pan in the oven. Set the oven to Broil, Medium, for 5 minutes and press Start. When the oven signals, remove the pan, transfer the melts to the cutting board. Place the remaining tuna slices in the roasting pan and repeat.
  • 8Place half the tomato slices and lettuce on 4 of the tuna melts. Repeat layering with the remaining tuna melt slices, tomato and lettuce. Butter the remaining toast and place buttered-side down on top.
  • 9Insert a skewer into each corner of the stack, piercing through all the layers to hold the sandwich together. Cut each sandwich into 4 triangles and serve.
