Ingredients
Measurements:
4 hot dog buns
1 oz unsalted butter
at room temperature
4 hot dogs
Ketchup
to serve
American mustard
to serve
For the charred onion
1 large yellow onion
finely chopped
2 tbsp olive oil
¼ tsp kosher salt
Instructions
1Place the hot dog buns on a cutting board and trim either side of the long edge to straighten. Spread the cut sides with butter.
2Line the roasting pan with foil. Insert the oven rack into position 3 Down and place the pan on the rack. Place the buns, buttered side down, in the air fry basket and insert the basket into position 1. Set the oven to Toast, Darkness 3, select 4 Slices and press Start. When the oven signals at the end of toasting, turn the buns and repeat toasting the other side. Once toasted, remove the air fry basket and buns from the oven and set aside. Leave the roasting pan in the oven.
3Adjust the oven to Air Fry, Super Convection, 400°F for 15 minutes and press Start to preheat. Meanwhile, continue to the next step.
4To prepare the charred onion, place the onion, oil and salt in a small bowl and stir to combine.
5Score the hot dogs in a crosshatch pattern, about a third of the way down. Place evenly spaced apart in the air fry basket, crosshatch facing up.
6Once preheated, evenly scatter the onion in the center of the hot roasting pan and air fry for 15 minutes. When the oven signals, stir the onion and insert the basket into position 1.
7The onion should be soft, translucent and charred around the edges and the hot dogs should have opened along the scoring. If not, press A Bit More.
8Gently slice the top of each bun open, just enough to make room for the hot dog. Nestle in the hot dog, then pile on the ketchup, mustard and onion. Enjoy this classic bite!
